Gleeson: Gloves start coming off after explosive CCC accusations

It’s hard to tell who’s going hardest against chairman Alan MacSporran over recent allegations within the CCC, the Gold Coast mayor or the former LGA boss, writes Peter Gleeson.

It’s a dead heat between Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and former Local Government Association boss Greg Hallam on who has gone hardest against CCC chairman Alan MacSporran.

Hallam told Des Houghton that “MacSporran must go’’, after the LGAQ backed the so-called Logan Eight. Fraud charges were dropped against the councillors after the Department of Public Prosecutions said the case was weak.

On the Gold Coast, Cr Tate was investigated by the Crime and Corruption Commission and cleared.

However, that didn’t stop Cr Tate from giving MacSporran a few jabs as they traded correspondence.

As former Gold Coast city council chief executive David Edwards was departing the scene after a brief stint, McSporran wrote to Tate about part of the CCC probe.

Tate thanked him for the letter, believing MacSporran wanted to throw his hat in the ring for the job. The confusion was resolved quickly.

A parliamentary committee investigation into the Logan Eight affair is due to be handed down before the end of the month.

Counsel assisting Jonathan Horton has invited the committee to consider terminating MacSporran’s tenure.
