Gleeso: Time for another referendum on daylight saving in Queensland

Can the last person in Queensland please turn out the lights before they leave?

Or, better still, if you still are opposed to daylight saving, just get the hell out of the Sunshine State, once and for all.

The fact that Queensland, one of the most progressive, modern and prosperous jurisdictions in the world, doesn’t have daylight saving is criminal.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is calling for a 2024 referendum on bringing in daylight saving, saying three million Queenslanders did not vote when it was last polled in the 1990s.

While we’re at it, can we have a referendum to bring back an Upper House to keep some checks and balances on this government, but that’s a story for another day. Daylight saving makes so much sense in Queensland.

It would put us on equal time zones as the southern states, but more importantly, give people an extra hour of daylight each evening during summer.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will say she doesn’t want to divide Queensland by having a referendum.

Rubbish. We’re already divided. North Queensland doesn’t want a bar of the southeast anyway, so why should we worry about what they think.

Queensland already has a reputation for being the capital of Australia’s hillbilly politicians. The fact that we’re an hour behind the other states just solidifies that perception that we’re a little bit slower than the rest.

Bring on the referendum. We need to be all on the same hymn sheet when it comes to time zones in this country.
