Opinion: It’s time for Queen Elizabeth II to abdicate

Time has caught up with Queen Elizabeth. She can no longer complete her duties and should now step aside, writes Des Houghton. VOTE IN THE POLL

Today I urge my Queen, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to abdicate.

Ma’am, you have done enough.

You have served Great Britain and the 54 members of the British Commonwealth of Nations with honour and distinction for 70 years now, and it is time to retire.

Our Queen is in ill health and missed the opening of the British Parliament this week for only the third time in 59 years.

Her Majesty chose not to show off her baby bumps in 1959 and in 1963, when she was pregnant with the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex respectively. Then
she allowed the Lord Chancellor to speak for her.

Time has caught up with the Queen. She can no longer complete her duties and should step aside.

This week a Buckingham Palace spokesman said Her Majesty was suffering “episodic mobility problems”. The heir to the throne Prince Charles spoke in Parliament on her behalf.

Westminster Palace is no place for monarchs on mobility scooters or wheelie walkers.

The Queen’s doctors advised her to rest last month after a bout of Covid left her “exhausted”.

Because of her increasing frailty we may not see her in public again.

And let me whisper an uncomfortable truth. Our beloved monarch is 96 years old.

Her absence in Parliament this week was not an insignificant one. The Prince of Wales looked every bit a king in his Admiral of the Fleet uniform as he read his mother’s speech, at her command.

It was the first time Charles had assumed such a major constitutional duty.

Close by sat the Duke of Cambridge in attendance for the first time in his capacity as Counsellor of State.

The heirs acquitted themselves well and gave us a glimpse of what to expect in the future.
