Opinion: Drivers to be penalised for idiot pedestrians

HAVE you seen these zombies who step onto roads without looking because their eyes are glued to their phones? Yet Brisbane City Council intends to penalise drivers with a drop in speed limits around key shopping precincts, writes KYLIE LANG.

Queensland launches new campaign targeting 'pedestrian distraction'

I CAN’T tell you the number of times I’ve nearly collected a pedestrian of late and I’m not a careless driver or a speed demon.

These zombies who step onto roads without looking - because their eyes are glued to their dumb phones - and who fail to pick up any noise other than the music blaring in their ears are the ones at fault.

Yet the Brisbane City Council intends to penalise drivers for the idiocy of pedestrians?

Give me a break.

Under the guise of keeping people safe, the council is merely finding another revenue stream

and we motorists are the suckers forced to pay.

How about directing efforts instead to fining the clueless imbeciles who scare the hell out of law-abiding taxpayers by walking in front of their cars and strolling across four lanes of traffic without a care in the world?

Ah, but that would be harder than setting up 24-hour cameras to catch drivers accidentally exceeding the newly proposed 40kmh limit around shopping centres now, wouldn’t it?

And we all know how many pedestrians are likely to be jaywalking in our sleepy suburbs after midnight - none.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says it is because pedestrians are inattentive and impatient that the slower speeds must be introduced.

This is just another example of penalising the majority for the indiscretions of the minority when what should really be happening is making pedestrians accountable for their actions.

It’s called personal responsibility, something that is increasingly lacking in our overly governed society.
