It was the late-night union deal that handed Queensland a new premier but left many in the state furious.
Steven Miles is set to be Queensland’s next Premier, following the resignation of Annastacia Palaszczuk, with Cameron Dick to be Deputy Premier.
Following a deal between union powerbrokers, Mr Miles will get the nod as Health Minister Shannon Fentiman conceded she does not have the numbers and will withdraw any bid to become Queensland’s next premier.
Monday night’s negotiations, which extended past 10pm, were understood to be messy but Labor members were desperate to get behind a consensus candidate to end destructive leadership speculation.
The end of the road for Ms Fentiman’s leadership tilt came effectively less than 12 hours after she officially declared her hand.
News of the deal sparked a furious response from readers.
Some claimed it was yet another sign of the all-too-powerful union in the state.
Others said either way it’s time for change.
While some simply threw their hands up and insisted the whole saga illustrates the mess of Queensland.

Unions at it again!
Maria
As we can see, As long as Labour is in power the unions will continue to make all the important and final decisions. These powerful unions are a dictatorship and a danger to democracy as their rule is absolute. Hopefully next election we’ll vote Labour out and put the unions back in their place, to the benefit and wellbeing of the people they are supposed to represent and not become a more powerful political entity than the government it’s supposed to serve
Paul
Oh Boy, here we go again, the Unions used their power to get Albo in as ALP leader and now this, Gee do we really need another Union puppet?
Steve
Democracy is well and truly dead in Queensland. Whilst this revelation is far from new, we now have union dictatorship right across the front page of our national newspapers. To all the Labor voters out there, how about putting just a little thought into your vote next election and send a message to the union dictatorship that we’re not taking their crap anymore. Queenslanders, it’s time to regain our democracy and be led by those on the ballot paper and not in the back rooms of the powerbrokers. Next election, let’s get our state back.

This confirms the need for change of Govt. Unions ran the chook and they will continue with the muppet miles. Fentiman was their best chance.
Pauline
Union control. Won’t need to vote in Qld anymore. Makes no difference.
Pauline
Democracy in Qld. What a sham.
Time for change
Darrel
If Miles is to be the new premier he must stamp his authority on the youth crime straight away. He must take a different approach than Annastacia did . A tougher approach. No dilly dallying about. That way he may have a small chance of winning the next election.
Wayne
We have got to get rid of this mob and we also have to take the power off the Unions. It is ridiculous that they can dictate who will be premier.
Stephen
So once again we don’t get the best person for the job. We get the person who is mates with the union. When will we ever learn?
Ian
Nothing like the democratic way we elect our politicians. I’m so proud that we the people get to have who WE want to govern us. Oh wait a minute ….
Charles S, Brisbane
So much for democracy. At least the great people of Queensland will get our say in October 2024.
Lesley
Shannon Fentiman will be a good Opposition leader after October election
The whole thing is a mess

The worst and most unethical government in history just confirmed they are totally out of touch and will get destroyed at next election
MrBiggles
Same Clowns, Same Circus, just a different ringmaster who isn’t up to the job.
Brian
Hahaha, what a joke. Perhaps Fentiman will end up Opposition leader next October.
Michael
Time to sell and move interstate. This man is totally unreliable and cannot be trusted. Can’t wait for October to get Labor out of the seat.
Stephen
Queensland the laughing stock of the Country, a union selected premier no less, what a charade.
