K’gari (Fraser Island) and the dingo issue: What you have to say

A war of words has broken out over the future of dingoes on K’gari – have your say.

Dingo terror: Inside the new K’gari

“Every other animal that attacks a human gets put down.”

The opinion of Jayde Harrison has been shared with more than 35 per cent of readers in our poll asking about how to solve K’gari’s dingo problem.

The latest in a long line of attacks on humans on the site formerly known as Fraser Island left a 23-year-old Brisbane woman in hospital after she was mauled in July.

The leader of the dingo pack has since been put down, sparking further debate about who is at fault.

Should the government introduce more food sources for the dingoes? Should humans follow the rules more? Or should the dingoes be culled to prevent further incidents?

Behind “cull more dingoes”, the second most popular voting option was “do nothing – people should just follow the rules”.

That split of opinion has spilt on to Facebook where readers were torn on what the solution should be.

WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT CULLING DINGOES

Those for dingo culling

Jayde Harrison

I am on the fence with this one … but … Every other animal that attacks a human gets put down – Domestic or wild!

Glenda Bryant

Depends, all different situations, if they have done it before, like this one apparently … yes!

Peta Comerford

Well I guess she wasn’t expecting to be attacked.

But folks is a domestic dog did that it would be put down.

Merilyn Roberton

I think culling is in order (again) problem is they put them in rural areas on the mainland & don’t tell the neighbouring property owners. Instead of killing people they kill wildlife & stock. It’s a difficult problem.

Should dingoes be culled on K’gari?

Bec Evargsum

Would the question and hubbub be the same if it was a shark that took a swimmer? When we step into their territory we are fair game. Don’t like the danger, don’t take the risk. Pretty simple really.

Kate Maree Greentree

Better solution keep the people out

Peter Burton

Just bring back the horses and other wildlife sources of food for them. Problem solved.

Pam Shipp

The poor thing is better off they are starving unless the government sets up a feeding program this will keep happening it would be a good idea to remove humans from there too

Dave N Bec Peachey

I knew this would be the outcome as soon as i saw it on the news just another excuse to justify culling the dingoes – total bull***t.

Mandy Jason Wasley

This is what happens when humans think it’s ok to feed wild animals and take selfies next all humans will not be allowed on the island.

Cherie Docking

Maybe it’s humans that need to make the adjustments. After-all aren’t we the ones encroaching on their territory. Maybe consider camping elsewhere. Leave them be!

Wendy Summers

The dingoes were just fine before we came along. Of course they’re going to chase something moving at speed along their home. I feel sorry she was attacked, but it’s the dingo’s territory, not ours.

Does the jogger get fined for not following the guidelines for staying at Fraser Island?

Shell Suters

maybe they need to look into why this is happening, do they not have enough food?

Lenore Brock

Release a heap of rabbits or hares on the island then they would have some natural food.

Wayne Turner

People need to understand if you go over to Fraser Island you take that risk that dingoes are around live there warning signs about them

Joan Burke

Why kill the dingo. It is in its own home and humans are intruders.

Shari Oneill

why ?

we are the “visitors” on their island, everyone knows to be careful and to follow the strict guidelines.

You visit K’gari with the understanding that the Dingoes are quite dangerous.

People won’t be happy until we destroy another unique species.

Anton Dominik Maric

No leave it alone ffs

Scott Mc

If they get rid of pack alpha, wouldn’t it just promote another. I don’t see the point, people might need to read one of the many signs about the dingoes on the island

Dingo just wanted a feed.

Let the horses go back on Fraser the dingoes will feed on the weak or older.

Gail Whitaker

Ya that’s right just shut the island down isn’t that what you’re all want simple
