Gina Rinehart backs Gold Cost hosting Commonwealth Games

“Garbage” or “go for it”?

Queenslanders remain divided over Gold Coast’s push to revive the 2026 Commonwealth Games, despite Australia’s richest person now getting behind the bid.

Gina Rinehart breathed fresh life into the bid to save the Commonwealth Games ditched by Victoria, joining forces with major sporting bodies to help Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

Victorian Premier Dan Andrews in July axed the Games because of claimed huge cost blowouts.

And while it is understood Mrs Rinehart is not prepared to bankroll the Games herself – which Cr Tate claims could be staged on the Glitter Strip for a little over $1 billion – she has offered to do whatever else she can to help the city secure the event.

However that proposal has split opinion of Queenslanders, some concerned of the cost to taxpayers; others right behind Mrs Rinehart’s help.

WHAT YOU SAID

THOSE FOR THE GAMES

Kerri

go for it it’s a no brainer but this time tell.the locals to stay

Bocker

She’s going to make Dan look very silly if she helps rescue the games and pulls it off for $1b when Victorians are being told it will cost $6b. And there’s the lure of getting Victoria out of a $1b cancellation settlement. Let’s see how Dan spins his way out of this one. Go Gina!

Ray

How ironic that the Goldy can put the games on for about the same amount that it’s costing Victoria NOT to hold them. Dan can just write the cheque out to Gold Coast council.

Go Gina – thank you for your ongoing support

Timothy

Gina Olympics is better than Anna’s Olympics

Gman

Thankyou Gina. Let’s do it.

THOSE ON THE FENCE

Brad

For me, Perth is missing this trick. They locked the rest of the world out during Covid, they are sports mad, they are resource wealthy, and it would be a great PR exercise to showcase to all that they are well and truly back open for business.

Earl

Those that stand to make money from the games including some of the athletes should be paying for them. Not the little guy on the street who is struggling just to pay the politicians wages.

Graeme

It’s all part of Labor’s grand plan to bring an end to the Commonwealth games and push to become a republic.

THOSE AGAINST THE GAMES

Matthew

Please no more government funds for sporting events and facilities until the housing, hospitals, aged care facilities are funded

Angela

I’d rather have Disneyland. Melbourne dumps these games and is rewarded with the happiest place on Earth?! They played the long con.

AM

Thanks but no thanks. After the last Commonwealth Games held on the Gold Coast the answer is a big NO.

Ron

Thats very generous from Gina – thank you, but please also get behind the real world show, the Olympics that can leave a huge tourism boost and can showcase world wide athletes.

Bill

Who cares. We want cheaper housing for our homeless … we have important issues we want fixed instead of this garbage.
