While it’s understandable for someone to not feel like dining with a group of people who have just announced a public attack on one of your major ideas, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s dummy spit over the Queensland Resources Council’s campaign against her government’s hike in mining royalties is a serious case of biting the hand that feeds you.

After all, this $90bn industry not only props up the state budget, but also underpins the economic viability of large swathes of the state – particularly in the regions.
Surely the leader of a resource-reliant state such as Queensland should be strong enough to front up to have the difficult debates. She certainly would have won some kudos for getting up at yesterday’s lunch and justifying the tax impost.
Instead, she stayed away – and told her ministers and directors-general to do the same. It was petty, short-sighted, and rather cowardly.
