Des Houghton: Could Steven Miles be on the brink of exiting politics?

After nine years as a minister, and then Premier, it seems Steven Miles has had enough. His party is comatose. Cyclone Crisafulli has seen to that, writes Des Houghton.

There is widespread speculation within the Labor Party that Steven Miles will soon exit political life.

The Opposition Leader has come to realise he has no future in Parliament, a former high-ranking member of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s staff told me.

After nine years as a minister, and then Premier, it seems Miles has had enough. At the glittering 2032 Olympics launch at Howard Smith Wharves this week he cut a lonely figure and left early.

Many averted their eyes as he walked past.

His party is comatose. Cyclone Crisafulli has seen to that.

The only reason for Miles to stay would be the $304,000 + salary and chauffeur-driven car, said the source.

Miles earned $462,450 as Queensland Premier.

And former ministers Shannon Fentiman or Cameron Dick are not the frontrunners to replace him.

The names Bart Mellish and Meaghan Scanlon have been tossed into the ring.
