Analysis: Qlders deserve better than what this Parliament has served up

With Thursday the final sitting day of Parliament before the election, don’t expect anything resembling civilised debate, writes state political editor Hayden Johnson.

In the dying days of this decrepit parliament Queenslanders get an insight into how Labor and the LNP will fight the state election – and it isn’t pretty.

Claims of disgusting lies, savage bloodletting, policy constipation and desperation were thrown across the chamber as those of the 93 MPs contesting this election scrambled to position themselves for power come October 27.

Queenslanders are poorer for it, with neither party yet to offer a bold vision for this growing state.

Labor’s Steven Miles and Cameron Dick have pleaded with Queenslanders to vote for the future and not to express an opinion about the past.

Yet they spent the past week screaming about the conduct of the historic Newman LNP government.

Every day well-paid ministers used parliament to remind Queenslanders – despite few real people tuning in – about the conduct of the LNP in power nine years ago.

Backbenchers unable to sell their personal achievements blindly followed to parrot the number of public servants sacked by Campbell Newman.

Some sit ashen-faced, perhaps knowing they’re marching towards defeat after failing to make the most of their privileged time in this place.

The LNP offered little more for the millions of residents of this great state.

It used question time to ask Mr Miles why, like him, more Queenslanders weren’t hiring luxury private jets to eat cake with friends.

They also accused Shannon Fentiman of a Judas-like betrayal of the premier for speaking about her ambitions.

Of course, Ms Fentiman was positioning herself for a battle with Deputy Premier Dick to become opposition leader should Labor lose the election.

Neither the LNP nor third-term Labor government mentioned a vision for this growing state just eight years out from a once-in-a-generation Olympic and Paralympic Games opportunity.

Instead, Labor baselessly claimed public servants would be sacked if the LNP was elected and argued Queensland would revisit the 2018 abortion debate.

On the other side, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli is drip-feeding policies that tinker around the edges of the ambitious leadership Queensland desperately needs.

He’s promised to review everything except the kitchen sink without, on many occasions, revealing what he stands for.

If this week in Parliament is anything to go by, the state election won’t be a contest of big ideas.

There’s one day to go. Queensland deserves better.
