A child has been killed and three other adults seriously injured after a suspected domestic violence incident in New Zealand.
Police have blocked off the residential street in Hamilton and a 34-year-old man has been arrested.
Nearby residents reportedly called police after hearing the disturbance coming outside to watch the midnight fireworks.
“When police arrived at the property, they found one person deceased and two others, who were taken to hospital, seriously injured,” NZ Police said in a statement.
A 34-year-old man was found a short distance from the address with serious injuries and was also transported to hospital, where he remains under police guard.
“Police would like to reassure the community that this is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to the wider public.”
It is believed the alleged offender suffered from self-inflicted injuries.
“A scene examination will take place at the property today,” police said.
In the morning, blood could be seen across the porch of the home.
Neighbours took to social media to share their condolences for the family.
“My heart goes out to our neighbours and every one affected,” one wrote.
“What a sad outcome for a New Year.”
