A report of a grass fire at the intersection of Sadadeen Rd and Stott Terrace came through at 3pm on Wednesday.

Fire and Rescue Service crews found multiple fires burning in the area, which were close to a property.

The fires caused a “large amount of smoke” over the roads.

They gained control of the fire within an hour of the initial call.

Southern Watch Commander Thomas Chalk said “blustery” weather sparked the fire in some vacant Sadadeen lots on Wednesday afternoon.

But he said the dry weather let the blaze spread far and fast, making its way into a back yard about 2.30pm.

Sergeant Chalk said the fire threatened neighbouring properties.

He said no one was injured in the incident, and understood the property’s residents were able to return home after the fire was extinguished.

Cannabis and alcohol seized after car interception

A 37 year-old will face court after police seized a significant amount of alcohol and drugs in their vehicle, alleged to have been destined for remote communities.

On Friday, detectives from the Southern Criminal Investigation Branch and the Dog Operations Unit intercepted a vehicle at a random testing station in Erldunda.

Shortly after, Drug Detection Dog Yeva located around 30 litres of alcohol and 700 grams of cannabis, which police allege was destined for the community of Mutitjulu and surrounds.

The 37 year-old driver was issued a Notice to Appear for secondary supply and drug offences.

Acting Senior Sergeant Michael Curtiss said the bust would break off “far reaching consequences”.

“The supply and distribution of alcohol and illicit drugs in remote communities has far reaching consequences and is often a driver of Domestic and Family Violence,” he said.

“NT Police through the Substance Abuse and Intelligence Desk in Alice Springs will continue to proactively target anyone who attempts to bring alcohol and drugs into restricted areas.

“To anyone who thinks this is a lucrative market, you never know when we will be on the roads and police will catch up with you.”

OC spray deployed after alleged ‘melees’, police ‘horse kicked’

Several people have been arrested after a series of alleged “melees” swept through the streets of the Alice Springs CBD, including an incident where a police officer was allegedly “horse kicked” in the face.

Southern Watch Commander Robert Griffiths said police attended a spate of incidents where kids and adults were allegedly fighting among themselves throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Sergeant Griffiths said the incidents were “separate but linked”.

In one such incident, he said a vehicle was allegedly spotted driving erratically, and the passenger was protruding from the window wielding a machete-like weapon.

Sergeant Griffiths said police attempted to arrest the 27-year-old driver – who owned the vehicle – when the vehicle stopped in place.

“He (allegedly) horse kicked the apprehending member to the face and made good his escape through the passenger door of that vehicle,” he said.

Sergeant Griffiths said the man was arrested after a foot pursuit and the officer has not sought medical treatment, though he is still in pain some hours later.

He said the man was expected to be charged on Sunday with a range of offences including assaulting police, driving in a dangerous manner, and possession of dangerous drugs.

Sergeant Griffiths said more people were detained during further incidents.

He said police deployed OC spray while attempting to arrest an 18-year-old man involved in an alleged melee.

In another incident, he said a 17-year-old was arrested and would likely be charged on Sunday.

“He was (allegedly) armed with a hammer and captured on CCTV swinging that hammer around in an offensive manner,” Sergeant Griffiths said.
