A South Coast community is rallying around an up and coming young footy player who suffered a devastating spinal injury during a game, as the status of his recovery remains “unknown”.
Corrimal Cougars player and young Indigenous man Malaki Moreton suffered the injury at the weekend and was flown to North Ryde Hospital before being transferred to a specialist spinal unit at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney.
Moreton, a first-year teaching student at the University of Wollongong who last year played first grade under 18s in the Moruya Sharks before joining the Corrimal Cougars, has undergone surgery.
But according to those close to him, “the severity and ongoing impact to his life is still unknown”.
Moreton’s friend Tallon said: “He was obviously just playing the game he loves – that we all love – and has suffered this unfortunate injury.”
Moruya resident Keira Colburn urged the community to donate to a GoFundMe fundraiser and wrote on Facebook: “Come on lets show this beautiful family what the South Coast is all about and let's get behind the family.
In a statement the Moruya Sharks RLFC wrote: “We would like to wish our former player Malaki a speedy recovery.
A spokesman from his former school Carrol College, Broulee, wrote: “Our support and prayers are with Malaki and his family at this difficult time.”
“A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help support Malaki and his family throughout this difficult time.”
More than $20,000 has been raised for Moreton to date.
