While Australian would-be politicians are whittled down through back-room deals and party preselection meetings, in America they do things differently.
Iowa, along with New Hampshire, is a key make or break state for candidates seeking their party’s nominations for the presidency.
While Joe Biden has it all but sewn up for the Democrats (not that they are taking any chances, with rival candidates being kept off the ballot), the Republicans are making more of a contest of it.

Meanwhile as Iowans go to the caucuses, turnout amid the violently bad weather will make for more of a contest.
Whose voters are most motivated will be a good indicator of things to come in the months ahead.
