A 25-year-old woman who drove “erratically”, before colliding with another vehicle causing it to spin out of control, has been scolded by a magistrate who described her driving as “completely inappropriate”.
Emily Catherine Reed, 25 of Warnervale, was sentenced in Wyong Local Court after she was found guilty of reckless driving and negligent driving.
Police facts state that on October 30, 2023 at 11.30am, Reed was driving a Suzuki Swift at Sparks Rd, Jilliby.
As she approached an intersection of Sparks Rd at a red light, she was witnessed driving “erratically”, police facts state.
Reed was travelling east on Sparks Rd and was quickly approaching the victim’s vehicle from behind before overtaking another vehicle.
The victim raised his hand and informed his wife that the vehicle was going to hit them.
Reed attempted to pass the vehicle by crossing unbroken double white lines.
Fearing there could be a collision with oncoming traffic, the victim moved over to the left so Reed could pass.
Reed’s vehicle then collided with the victim’s vehicle with the victim feeling a nudge.
Unsuccessful in passing the victim’s vehicle, Reed continued following the victim at close range and continually swerving left to right intimidating the victim.
She then again collided with the victim’s vehicle by nudging it. The rear of the victim’s vehicle began to swing out uncontrollably and the victim had to battle with the steering to regain control.
“Reed has driven down the painted medium strip eventually crossing the path of the victim, colliding with the front left portion of the victim’s vehicle causing the accused to spin into the west bound lanes of Sparks Road where the accused vehicle had collided with another oncoming vehicle,” police facts state.
“The whole incident was witnessed by a driver following, with them describing the ordeal as confronting, and the accused driving behaviour as aggressive, intimidating, irrational, shaky and very dangerous,” court documents state.
Reed’s lawyer told the court her client had expressed remorse and had written a letter of apology to the court, and had completed a traffic offenders program to showcase the level of insight she caused on the day of her offence.
Magistrate Justin Peach sentenced Reed to a two year community corrections order and also suspended her from driving for 12 months.
“The vehicle spun and was damaged and you could have ended up killing yourself or someone else because of the behaviour you engaged in.
You seem to belatedly come to the position where you recognise your driving was completely inappropriate and had significant risks for the victims and also yourself,” he said.
