It’s not every day a Labor backbencher takes a leaf out of Scott Morrison’s book but that’s exactly what Moreton MP Graham Perrett did at a charity-run soccer match at Parliament House this week.
The game, held on Wednesday, was run by the Big Issue magazine to raise funds and tackle homelessness with several amused bystanders reporting Mr Perrett took that a little too literally.
Playing against bureaucrats, homeless people, journalists and politicians, Mr Perrett was caught on camera bulldozing several of his opponents.
The crash prompted an intervention from the host of the event who warned that although social games don’t have cards, Mr Perrett’s studs-up tackles would definitely earn him a straight red.
But the warning did little to stop the Labor machine who only minutes afterwards crashed into an opponent sending them both flying.
In videos captured at the game, journalists look on horrified as Mr Perrett pummelled about five opponents to the ground.
“The final was an aggressive one but I would say Graham was one of the key aggressors,” one spy told Telegraph.
“He would apologise to people after he would tackle them but then he would do it all over again.”
When one of his victims was asked how he was doing after surviving the attack, he responded: “I won’t be voting for him”.
A member of the opposing team watching the competitive carnage unfold commented that Perrett was like a “walking red card”.
Mr Perrett took it like a champ, telling The Daily Telegraph via text he had a history of playing very bad soccer.
“Lies lies lies. Don’t believe the photos and videos and my long history of very bad soccer playing (I’m a rugby league player). I’m as gentle as a lamb,” he said.
“There are so many bad photos of my poor behaviour I have no defence at all!!!”.
Mr Perrett claimed he was harder on his own Labor colleagues compared to the homeless players.
