Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has a big list of must-do items for his new term in parliament and just three years to get them done.

The Daily Telegraph took a temperature check of what people would do themselves if they were PM for a day to get a sense of what Mr Albanese should be aiming for to secure himself a third term in office.

First cab off the rank would be cutting student debt, which means the PM’s move to legislate a 20 per cut in debt this week gets a big thumbs-up from debt-laden millennials.

That’s the first step in helping them with the rising cost of living and easing them into the housing market.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn opened parliament with a speech – written by the government – outlining the priorities for the upcoming term and warning it took office “amid a worldwide inflation crisis” and also claimed that “fighting inflation was prioritised along with cost-of-living relief for Australians”.

On the streets of Sydney people returned to that theme of cost-of-living pressures with a call to close the divide between rich and poor.

However others focused on “allowing dogs to come into shopping malls” and, for those too young to vote, providing “lollies for everyone”.

Barrister and former Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi KC jumped into the debate when approached by The Daily Telegraph after first noting that the PM has “a lovely relationship” with his fiance Jodie Haydon, which is a big vote winner.

Down to business and Mr Tedeschi would waste no time if given the keys to the Lodge. “I would convince my treasurer not to tax unrealised capital gains – that would be my first job,” he said.

“It is going to affect so many people over the next decade,” he warned.

“A lot of people don’t realise – they think it is only affecting the super-wealthy but it is unindexed so, as time goes on, it will affect more and more people.

“If you suffer a loss in capital value in one year it doesn’t get taken into account later on.”
