Villawood: $112m warehouse centre could create 600 jobs

A Sydney site used to manufacture TNT during WWII — and banned pesticide DDT in the 60s — is set for a $112m upgrade with the potential to generate up to 600 new jobs.

A warehouse site used to produce TNT during WWII, is set for a major $112 million redevelopment with the potential to generate up to 600 new jobs for the area.

The 2 Christina Rd, Villawood address has a storied history and needed several years of remediation to be usable again after chemicals manufactured on the site led to environmental damage. The address was home to the Commonwealth Explosives Factory from 1941 to 1946, before being sold off to a private company.

Besides the production of TNT, the (now banned) pesticide DDT was produced on the site in the 1960s before its damage to humans and the environment were understood.

The chemical raised the risk of premature births and also decimated bird populations, including the peregrine falcon.

In 2001 most of the site’s buildings were demolished and two years later, former owners Orica began a 12-year clean up operation. The company says the process was completed in 2015.

As part of the remediation 15,000 cubic metres of soil was removed from the site and 12,000 cubic metres of new soil brought in.

The site was bought by property group MaxCap and developers Time & Place last May and a development application was submitted to Canterbury-Bankstown Council in recent months.

The proposed development would include 12 warehouses, providing 65,060 sqm of warehouse space, and 3940 sqm of office space. It also includes plans for 358 car spaces and three entries.

The developers note the precinct would operate 24 hours a day, with the warehouses leased out. As part of the application, the developers claimed up to 600 full-time jobs could be created for the area.

Located directly in the middle of the M4 and M5, just off Woodville Rd, the developers have suggested the proposed precinct could be used for ‘last mile’ logistics, and businesses needing small-scale industrial sites close to Sydney’s inner west.
