Thirteen schools across Sydney and regional NSW have been forced to shut on Thursday as widespread power outages continue to disrupt classes and dangerous fire conditions persist across the state.
The King’s School in Parramatta cancelled classes early on Thursday due to a significant outage, while several other campuses have also confirmed they will not operate.
St John Vianney’s Primary School, Rooty Hill High School, Compton High School, Blacktown Girls High School and St Andrew’s College in Marayong have all closed their doors, citing ongoing power issues.
Three public schools, Borenore, Nashdale and Spring Hill, as well as Macdonald Valley Public School have also been declared non-operational for the day.
Central Coast Grammar School, St Aidan’s Parish School and Bede Polding College in South Windsor are also closed on Thursday.
Electricity providers say repair efforts have been hampered by total fire bans across large parts of NSW, with systems that usually restore power automatically switched off to prevent the risk of sparking a bushfire.
The latest closures follow a major disruption on Wednesday, when 25 public schools across the Riverina and Central West were shut down as extreme heat and fire danger conditions intensified. Those campuses, most of them small and remote, were closed as temperatures soared up to 10 degrees above November averages and fire danger reached extreme levels.
Families are being urged to monitor official updates as conditions remain volatile.
