A former NSW volunteer fire brigade secretary and treasurer is seeking a mental health application after pleading guilty to embezzling more than $38,000 from her organisation for personal use.

Tianah Jane Lynette Allsop, 27, appeared before Magistrate Jeff Linden at Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday for sentence after pleading guilty to embezzlement as clerk or servant in April.

However, her defence solicitor Amanda Fawaz sought an adjournment in order to apply for a section 14 mental health assessment.

If granted, it will allow Allsop to be diverted away from the criminal justice system and into a mental health treatment or support plan for up to 12 months. If successfully completed, no criminal conviction will be recorded.

Allsop will return to court on August 27.

The court heard that Allsop siphoned funds from the Murwillumbah Rural Fire Brigade’s accounts over a 20-month period, between December 2022 and August 2024, via approximately 20 transactions.

Police were alerted to the fraudulent activity in December 2024, after a brigade member discovered the accounts had been emptied.

Mr Linden adjourned the matter to be heard in Tweed Heads local court on August 27.
