A grieving Queen Elizabeth poignantly drove off into her new life without her husband on Monday as she left Windsor Castle at the wheel of her Jaguar, with two of her dogs reportedly in the back.
Seen for the first time since the Royal Family farewelled Prince Philip, the Queen wore a trademark floral headscarf as she ventured out of her private apartments, where she had retired with her Lady-in-Waiting Lady Susan Hussey immediately after Saturday’s funeral service.
Reports said the Queen was believed to have been driving her Jaguar to the Royal Burial Ground on Frogmore Estate, within the grounds of the castle, where the remains of Prince Philip will be placed.
She is facing a quiet 95th birthday tomorrow at Windsor Castle without her beloved husband of 73 years.
However, it may yet include Prince Harry after he reportedly spent two hours with his brother William and father Charles at the castle following the funeral.
It was the first time the trio had been together since Megxit and the first time they had all spoken since Harry and wife Meghan’s bombshell Oprah TV interview, sparking hopes of peace between the warring brothers who were seen in conversation after Saturday’s funeral.
“It’s early days but you’d hope this is exactly the first step Philip would have wished for,” a source told London’s Sun newspaper.
Another told the newspaper: “Harry and William appeared cordial as the cameras rolled and that seemed to pave the way for Charles to join them when everyone had left.
“It is not known what was said behind closed doors and when the cameras were turned off, but it’s unfathomable to think Megxit and Oprah did not come up.”
Prince Harry was expected to return to LA and his wife, who is seven-months pregnant with their second child, after a predicted stroll around Windsor with Prince Charles to view the tributes left for the Duke of Edinburgh.
His trip back to the US may now be postponed.
Harry has also signalled he will join William when the memorial statue for their mother Princess Diana is unveiled at Kensington Palace on July 1, which would have been her 60th birthday.
Royal biographer Peter Junor said: “Harry should stay for the Queen’s birthday as it is the least he can do for his grandmother and it gives him even more opportunity to talk to his father and his brother. There is a lot to be unravelled here.
“This is a falling-out that has gone on for a long time. They need the time, space and the trust.”
