A 15-year-old boy has died and a 14-year old boy had his arm severed after a horror jet ski crash in Sydney’s south.
Police and ambulance were called to the scene at the Georges River near Tom Uglys Bridge in Sylvania just after 6pm on Tuesday after two girls on the shoreline spotted debris floating in the river and saw a 14-year-old boy yelling for help and drifting in and out of consciousness.
Police believe the two boys were riding a jet ski when they hit an obstacle in the water, causing both to be thrown from the watercraft.
One of the first responding police officers jumped into the river to pull the 14-year-old to the edge.
He was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries, including a severed arm. Six ambulance vehicles attended the scene.
Inspector Timothy Carter praised the swift actions of emergency responders, calling the officer’s efforts “heroic.”
“The police have done their best to try and save these kids’ lives,” he said.
“We obviously feel great empathy towards the families.”
A crime scene has been established with investigations underway into the circumstances of the crash.
