Sydney golf club memberships increase with focus on food and entertainment

Golf clubs have seen a significant rise in social memberships, with families and young people flocking to venues across Sydney.

The Lynwood Golf and Country Club has seen an upward trend of social members over the past four years.

The local golf club has had a makeover — thanks to a focus on food, beverage and entertainment offerings, many local clubs have seen a marked increase in a younger generation of members.

The Beverley Park Golf Club in Sydney’s south has seen their number of social memberships triple in the past three years, thanks to an increased focus on hospitality and entertainment.

After consulting with local residents, the club has renovated its outdoor dining area, put on a revolving roster of bands, and updated their bar menu to include more craft beers and a vibrant wine list.

They’ve also got caterers, The Happy Soul Bistro, which offer nightly food specials.

Now, on a Friday night, the club is full with families.

“Golf is always our primary focus but we have a clubhouse that’s been waiting to be used, and the busier the better for everyone,” general manager Shaun Smith said.

The Lynwood Golf and Country Club has also seen an upward trend of social members for the past four years, particularly in the 18-29 years demographic.

As well as a golf course, they offer a driving range and all-day dining.

Group chief operating officer Andy Abey believes the reason for the increase is because of the “multifaceted experiences that modern hospitality venues offer”.

“We provide an environment that is inclusive, welcoming and accessible to all. We have worked hard to break down the traditional barriers associated with golf, ensuring our facilities offer great value for money and cater to everyone, regardless of skill level or background.”

Last year, former fine dining chefs Dave Moran and Josh McPhee, who run popular Dulwich Hill cafe The General, took over the catering at Marrickville Golf Club and opened Wharf St Kitchen.
