Sydney forecast: Cloudy skies and breezy conditions ease midweek before showers return over the weekend

A winter storm is impacting NSW this week, bringing blizzard conditions and damaging winds to alpine and inland areas, while Sydney faces breezy weather with showers and sunny spells.

A winter storm could sweep across NSW, bringing blizzard conditions, damaging winds, and a significant risk to livestock across large parts of the state, while Sydney is in for a mixed bag of winter weather, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting breezy conditions, brief showers and stretches of sunshine across the city.

In the state’s alpine regions, weather conditions have turned dangerous.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the Snowy Mountains, where north-westerly winds averaging 80 to 90km/h are hammering areas above 1900 metres.

Blizzard conditions are forecast to persist until early Wednesday morning, with white-out visibility and wind chill creating life-threatening hazards for anyone exposed. Thredbo Top Station is among the areas most affected, and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has strongly advised against any back country travel until the system passes.

Further inland, sheep graziers have also been put on alert.

The Bureau has issued a Sheep Graziers Warning for the Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Lower Western and Snowy Mountains forecast districts.

The combination of cold temperatures, strong westerly winds, and rain poses a serious threat to lambs and recently shorn sheep.

In Sydney, residents are experiencing a cool and breezy start to the week.

Tuesday will bring cloudy skies, occasional showers, and temperatures ranging between 11C and 20C.

Conditions are expected to ease by midweek, with mostly sunny weather forecast from Wednesday onwards.

By Thursday, clearer skies and cooler overnight lows will set in, with daytime highs in the high teens forecast through the weekend.

Authorities are encouraging residents across New South Wales to stay informed via the Bureau of Meteorology’s website and to heed all safety warnings as this powerful winter system continues to move across the state.
