A man has died after a crash in Sydney’s north west, with the incident compounding an already difficult Monday morning commute as major motorways across the city experience heavy delays.

Emergency services were called shortly after 1am to Lane Cove Rd at North Ryde following reports a car and truck had collided in the eastbound lanes.

A male passenger died before first responders arrived.

The male driver and a female passenger were trapped before being freed by firefighters and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 61-year-old truck driver was uninjured but taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and motorists have been urged to avoid the area, with closures expected for an extended period.
