First supermoon of 2024 rises behind firies battling raging wildfires

Sydneysiders and those further up and down the coast got a front-row seat to one of the best astrological displays of the year last night.

A Supermoon took over the skyline, as the moon moved to its closest point near earth.

The rare occurrance was best viewed as the mammoth sized object rose just after 6pm, with thousands of Sydneysiders stationed at vantage points along the coast.

For many, it was awe-inspiring, but to some experts it was a bit “ho-hum’’.

Associate professor Michael Brown from Monash University said: “It’s not actually that special, to most people it will just look like a regular full moon.’’

He added: “By all means have a look but while you are there you may be able to spot something a lot more special.”
