Police have located a capsized vessel belonging to a missing 78-year-old fisherman after his 18-year-old passenger scrambled to shore, with search efforts still underway.

About 1pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to the break wall in Seawall Road, Port Kembla in the state’s Illawarra, after reports a boat containing two people had capsized, NSW Police said in a statement.

An 18-year-old man – who was on the vessel before it capsized – managed to get himself to the shore and alerted members of the public who contacted emergency services, the statement said.

A search was launched by the Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter.

At 8am on Monday, the search resumed for the elderly man.

At 9.30am, part of a vessel was retrieved from the water – believed to be owned by the missing fisherman.

It has been taken to Port Kembla boat ramp for initial examination.

The search will continue throughout Monday.
