A homeless man has suffered serious injuries after two boys allegedly slashed him across the head with a large knife and struck his ankle with a machete in a horrifying pre-dawn attempted robbery on the Mid-North Coast.

Police will allege the man, who had been living rough in his car, was allegedly targeted as he slept on Warlters St at Port Macquarie at about 3am last Friday.

The 43-year-old man told officers he was woken by a knock on his car window by a boy asking for help before he opened a door and was allegedly ordered to hand over cash and his car keys.

He was then allegedly struck in the head with a large knife by one boy, causing a significant laceration, before a second person struck him in the ankle with a machete.

The blow allegedly caused a large gash and structural damage to his ankle.
