Police recover rare $8000 Pokémon card allegedly stolen in Warilla carpark robbery

Detectives remain tight-lipped on how they retrieved the rare collectable card, citing “operational reasons” amid an ongoing investigation.

Police have recovered a rare Pokémon card after it was allegedly stolen and its owner assaulted south of Wollongong last month.

But detectives remain tight-lipped on how they retrieved the card, which is said to be valued at more than $8000, citing “operational reasons” amid an ongoing investigation.

On Monday, NSW Police said a 38-year-old man had arranged to sell rare collectable cards to a buyer at a carpark in Warilla about 10.45pm on March 28.

But he later told police he was instead assaulted by a man purporting to be a buyer, and the card was stolen.

Detectives from the Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Calmar to investigate the incident.

Police announced on Wednesday night that, a short time after they made a public appeal for information, they were advised the card had been located.

“The circumstances of how the card was recovered cannot be disclosed at this time due to operational reasons, with investigations continuing into the alleged assault of the (seller),” police said in a statement.

Police had earlier released images of a red 2023 model Ford Mustang, with grey stripes, after it was seen in the vicinity of the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Lakes Entrance and Shellharbour roads.

On Wednesday night, police said they would still like to speak to its driver, who may be able to assist with inquiries.

Anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle is urged to contact Lake Illawarra Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.
