Sydney has been struck by another act of anti-Semitic vandalism, with the phrase “gas the Jews” marked on a wall near Sydenham train station.
Police confirmed they are investigating the incident, which was reported on Monday morning. Officers from Inner West Police Area Command have urged anyone with information to come forward.
“The NSW Police Force takes hate crimes seriously and encourages anyone who is the victim of a hate crime or witnesses a hate crime to report the matter to police,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
This latest incident is part of a disturbing surge in anti-Semitic attacks across Sydney.
On Saturday, two individuals were captured on CCTV spray-painting swastikas on Newtown Synagogue before attempting to set the building alight using an accelerant.
Jewish leaders have warned that Sydney is on the brink of experiencing a Melbourne-style terror attack, with one spokesperson describing the failed arson as “sheer luck” the synagogue did not ignite.
On Friday, the Allawah Synagogue in Sydney’s south was also targeted, with multiple swastikas spray-painted on its walls.
The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies has condemned the attacks, calling for increased security and community vigilance to prevent further incidents.
Police have urged anyone with information about the Sydenham graffiti or other hate crimes to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
