Plans for a $29m sports complex on the northern beaches for students at an exclusive lower north shore private school have been lodged with state planning officials.
Queenwood School for Girls at Mosman wants to build what it describes as a “state of the art sports precinct” at Oxford Falls.
Its proposal includes an outdoor sports field for soccer and hockey that combines eight tennis courts and an indoor sports hall for basketball and netball.
The school, with student fees up to $46,340 a year, bought the 2.1ha site of a former private home on Oxford Falls Rd for $10.7m in July last year.
The land is opposite the Oxford Falls Grammar School campus.
It has now lodged a State Significant Development (SSD) application with the NSW Planning Department.
By declaring a project as a SSD, the planning decision is moved from Northern Beaches Council to the state government, but an environmental-impact statement (EIS) and plan will still be released for public comment.
Queenwood has already commissioned a “scoping report” which is publicly available.
In September last year the school made an Instagram post, with a picture of principal Marise McConaghy at the site, holding a silver shovel.
“Today, we proudly celebrated the turning of the sod for our newly acquired 2.14-hectare property at Oxford Falls to symbolise and celebrate our ownership of this property,” the post stated.
In a newsletter to parents and students, the schools director of sport, Hayden Danks, wrote that Queenwood was “embarking on an exciting new chapter with the acquisition of land at Oxford Falls, where we will build a state-of-the-art Sports Precinct”.
“This bold move represents not only a significant investment in our facilities but also a forward-thinking commitment to preparing our students for the future,” Mr Danks stated.
“In a world that is changing rapidly, the role of sport in education has never been more critical, and the Oxford Falls development will provide a space for our entire community to come together, support one another, and grow.
“With sport participants averaging 3.3 higher ATAR points and being 78 per cent more likely to enrol in tertiary studies, it is clear that participation in school sports has a lasting impact.
“The Sports Precinct will play a vital role in this preparation, providing students with opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills — qualities that will be invaluable as they navigate their future careers.”
The scoping report attached to the application also detailed that a canteen and changing rooms would be built as well as a car park under the sports hall.
It revealed that the facility would be used on weekends and after hours as well as during school hours for intra- and inter-school sports.
The outdoor multipurpose field would be floodlit “to allow usages during winter months”.
