Sydney and much of NSW are heading into another stretch of unusually warm weather, with temperatures well above the April average and more sunny days forecast ahead of the Easter long weekend.

NSW will continue to experience above-average temperatures this week, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting unseasonal warmth to persist through the Easter long weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology says temperatures are currently sitting between three and four degrees higher than what’s typically expected for April.

The sunny spell is expected to linger through to the Easter long weekend, delivering ideal beach conditions on Friday and Saturday.

Winds may begin to pick up slightly during this period, but the warmth will hold for the start of the long weekend.

However, a southerly change is expected late into the weekend, with cooler air likely to move in from Sunday, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures by Monday.

Meanwhile, longer-range forecasts suggest that this unseasonal warmth isn’t going away any time soon.

NSW and many parts of the country are likely to experience a warmer-than-usual lead-up to Anzac Day, with the cooling typically associated with mid-to-late autumn delayed.

The Bureau said the lingering heat is due to the ocean still holding onto summer warmth, which is delaying the arrival of typical autumn weather.

Sydney’s forecast for the week is shaping up to be a mix of sunshine, mild showers, and unseasonal warmth.

On Wednesday, a top of 23C is forecast with a medium chance of late showers along the coastal fringe, and winds shifting from the south to the southwest during the evening.

Thursday will bring a continued risk of light showers during the morning and afternoon, while the mercury is again expected to reach 24 C. On Friday the long weekend will begin with a mostly dry and partly cloudy day forecast, light winds are possible with a top of 24C. Saturday will be sunny and warmer, climbing to 27C, with light winds developing during the afternoon. By Sunday, temperatures could peak at 29C before a southerly change moves through, bringing with it a slight chance of a shower and noticeably cooler conditions later in the day.

The combination of warmth, a powerful southern swell and gusty southerly winds could even lead to a rare phenomenon on Friday, surfable waves inside Sydney Harbour.

According to Weatherzone, Good Friday may see conditions line up just right for surfers to catch waves at iconic harbour locations like Lady Macquarie’s Chair and the Opera House forecourt, something that only happens once every few years.
