Toll road increases must be capped at inflation, Labor will declare as it launches a fresh assault on the cost of living burden.

The NSW Labor opposition will signal its plans to take a war on tolls to the next election, with the party set to give notice of a bill to the parliament today to tackle tolls.

The opposition will announce NSW drivers have paid $14bn in tolls in the past decade.

Labor’s policy will be to limit future toll increases to the CPI and require toll costs to be displayed at the entry to each road.

It would also ask the auditor-general to conduct a review of toll contracts, and mandate a toll-free period on the opening of all new roads.

NSW Labor leader Jodi McKay said Labor’s bill was the first step to ensure fairness and transparency in road tolling.

“This government’s addiction to tolls has led to Sydney becoming one of the most tolled cities in the world,” Ms McKay said.

“These tolls are hurting families doing it tough and making it harder for truckies and tradies to do business.

“Real wage growth is flat but tolls just keep going up, with no relief in sight.

“Something has to be done.”
