One teenager discovered the benefits of rationing his time on a mobile phone with a head-turning performance at the NSW Athletics junior championships in Sydney on the weekend.
Sadheel Kumar was part of a great race on the final day, beating Lachlan Herbert and Ivan Balic in a hotly contested U18 200m race.
And the reason for his improvement? Reducing his time on his mobile phone.
“I’m getting a lot more sleep,’’ said the 16-year-old from Liverpool.
“I’m not on my phone so much. I’ve tried to stop using it so much.’’
Kumar finished second to Cody Hasler in his 100m race with Herbert winning the U18 400m race.
Delta Amidzovski was another standout in the U18 division, breaking her own record in the
100m Hurdles 76.2cm.
She bettered her old time of 13.45 with a sizzling 13.42 to go below the 13.67 standard for the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Izzy Louison-Roe also had a stellar event, with personal bests in all her events.
The St George athlete won the U17 100m hurdles in 14.05, the long jump in 5.82m. the triple jump in 12.83m and the high jump with 1.82m - a Commonwealth Youth Games qualifier
Wollongong’s Chelsy Wayne left the field with a discus PB and a Commonwealth Youth Games qualifier with her 51.56m throw a whopping 33cm improvement on her best.
Another standout was Mali Lovell who produced a World Champs qualifier in women’s under-20 Para Ambulant 200m.
In the U16 100m race it was Oliver Facer who nabbed the gold from Xavier Perry and Wol Albino.
But in the 200m it was Perry who raced off with gold ahead of Albino and Joshua Smith.
Billy Blair won the 110m hurdles in his U17 racing but finished third in he 100m race won by Andrew Maenda.
Maenda then finished second to Dylan Hall in the 200m title race.
Grace Krause was back to her best, dominating the U17 sprinting with a victory in the 100m and 200m.
A multi medallist at the event in the under 16s was Tammin Lampret who took out the 100m and 200m double and also added gold medals in the 200 and 90m hurdles.
She also set PB in all but the 200m.
Jayden Tadoroski had a fantastic meet with the sprint double and also success in the long jump in the U14 racing.
Tadoroski said schoolmate Rashid Kabba and the great Usain Bolt are his inspirations.
Rhema Adelaja won the u14 200m race and Tahlia Tabone the 100m.
In one of the closest races of the meet, Maya Taber, 13, from the Randwick Botany club and Wenona school, won the 200m gold to add to her 100m success.
Pittwater high School student Lachlan Byrnes beat Jack Proudford and Cameron Badger for the gold in the U15 200m.
Byrnes, who also plays basketball with the Manly Warringah club, also won the 100m crown.
Divine Chukwudi won the U13 100m and 200m, beating Mia Wood in both.
Issac Beacroft also had a fantastic meet with gold medals in both the 3km and 1500km and a second in the steeplechase.
