NSW Liberal leader Kellie Sloane has signalled the Opposition is open to changing tack on workers’ compensation reforms as she continues her exposure blitz, after claiming the party’s leadership last week.

Speaking in Eastwood as she visited the state’s most marginal seat of Ryde on November 25, Ms Sloane said workers’ compensation reform was a matter of “open conversations and dialogue” in her party room, and while the Coalition’s policy had not changed, it could be up for debate.

The Minns government wants to overhaul the system to rein in skyrocketing business insurance premiums, while the Coalition – led by shadow treasurer Damien Tudehope – has blocked the reforms, arguing they would leave some injured workers without support.

Ms Sloane left a positive impression on shoppers at Eastwood yesterday.

Horse breeder Richard Johnston, 80, said he found her refreshing and had high hopes for her as Liberal leader.

“I think she is going to be good, with her background,” Mr Johnston said.

“She is going to be able to prosecute the Liberal Party case better than (former leader Mark) Speakman – who was a disappointment.”

Meanwhile, Ray Khoury, a landscaper and Eastwood resident, said: “She seems very professional, I have seen her on TV … She comes up well and we need a bit of personality.”

Eastwood retiree Tony was also full of praise for the former TV journalist.

“She seems like a nice person, and quite genuine. Young and moderate,” he said.

“I admire her as a person and a politician – but I am a bit old and set in my ways.”

However, Graham Bell, 74, said he wanted to see more from the new Liberal leader.

“I have to wait and see what she actually does, I know it is a hard job,” he said.

“They all say they are going to do things but never do.”

Ms Sloane’s bid to boost her profile comes after a 2023 survey by The Daily Telegraph in four Western Sydney electorates revealed only 9 per cent of respondents recognised then- opposition leader Mr Speakman.

Another survey held in September revealed just 69 out of 109 Kiama constituents recognised Premier Chris Minns.
