New childcare centre, town houses proposed for residential street in Mount Annan

Southwestern Sydney residents could soon have access to a new childcare centre, pending a successful development application. See what’s planned.

ACCC to launch inquiry into childcare costs

A new childcare centre - capable of caring for more than 90 children at any given time and some new homes - could be built in Mount Annan under a $4 million development application lodged with Camden Council.

According to the submitted documents, the proposed childcare centre facility would sit on one of the lots and front Morshead Rd. The centre would accommodate 98 children.

There would be 12 children in the two years and under room, 30 in the 2-3 years’ room and 56 children in the 3-5 years’ room.

Construction cost of the project has been estimated at just over $4 million and the development provides a total of 30 carparking spaces within a basement level.

A development application for 33 Morshead Rd, Mount Annan, proposes the construction of a 98-place centre-based child care facility.

“(The centre) creates opportunities for play spaces that provide high-quality amenity for children whilst ensuring the amenity of adjoining residences is maintained,” the documents state.

On the second lot of Morshead Rd, the development application proposes a multi dwelling housing component - consisting of five two-storey story units at the rear of the lot, with access via Buna Cl.

Earlier this year, a report from Victoria University affiliated Mitchell Institute revealed that some three million people in NSW are living in what it qualifies as “childcare deserts”, which are places where there are more than three kids for every childcare place available.

The geographical divide is stark, with suburbs in the inner city having a range of childcare options, while parents in the southwest and western suburbs, along with regional NSW, have to compete for very few places.

In Campbelltown, the data reveals there are at least three children in the suburb for every one childcare place. In Camden and Wollondilly, there are at least two.

The report found that more than 58 per cent of Campbelltown is considered a “childcare desert”. The same term is applied to 35.28 per cent of Wollondilly and 16.7 per cent of Camden.

The development proposal is on public exhibition until September 26, for more details, click here.
