The top performing primary and secondary schools in Sydney’s east in this year’s NAPLAN have been revealed, with one primary school ranking first in the entire state.
At the top of the region for primary and secondary alike is the prestigious Sydney Grammar School, its campuses in Darlinghurst and Edgecliff taking the crown for the east. Sydney Grammar’s preparatory school ranked first for primary schools in NSW with a score of 625.4 this year.
Sydney Grammar School’s sandstone secondary school scored 715.2 and recently joined the $50k club after raising its fees for 2026 by seven per cent.
Secondary schools Reddam House in Bondi and Sydney Grammar’s sister school SCEGGS Darlinghurst trail behind in second and third position, with scores of 650.4 and 643.2 respectively. The latest government data indicates the single-sex girl’s school SCEGGS Darlinghurst has the highest average parental income of any school in Australia.
Grammar, Reddam and SCEGGS are followed closely in the secondary school rankings by the the International French School of Sydney, Lycée Condorcet, and Ascham School in Edgecliff.
Primary School rankings are also entirely comprised of independent schools, with Ascham School taking the second position behind Sydney Grammar.
Rose Bay all-girls school Kambala took third ranking, followed by Cranbrook in Bellevue Hill and Reddam House in Woollahra.
Each of the five primary schools in the east’s top spots are feeder schools for independent secondary schools.
St Bernard’s Catholic Primary School in Botany is also among the most improved eastern suburbs schools compared to last year.
Kambala’s junior school director of curriculum Ky-Lee Murphy said the school achieved its results by ensuring students have a conceptual understanding rather than sticking directly to the curriculum.
“There are some schools that use textbooks and it’s one-size-fits-all, it’s not differentiated,” she said.
“We actually don’t do a lot of NAPLAN preparation. We focus on teaching, not preparing for NAPLAN.”
The Wentworth Courier’s analysis of the state’s highest performing schools in this year’s NAPLAN has revealed the most improved primary and high schools, and the top performing mainstream schools that outperformed both academically selective and elite private institutions.
Every school’s performance has been analysed by averaging Year 5 and Year 9 students’ reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy results in the 2025 NAPLAN.
