A 45-year-old man has been refused bail after allegedly threatening a woman and leading police on a dangerous high-speed pursuit through Sydney’s western suburbs.
Police launched an investigation on July 9 following reports of threatening messages sent to a 31-year-old woman with officers also looking into allegations that there had been breaches of an apprehended violence order.
About 5pm on July 13, officers attempted to arrest Jihad Hourani in a car on Crown Street, Granville.
According to police, Hourani allegedly attempted to flee by driving directly at two male constables with one officer forced against a brick fence and the vehicle reportedly ran over his foot.
As a result a pursuit began, with the Police Operations Response Support, Highway Patrol and POLAIR involved.
Authorities allege Hourani drove at high speeds, ran red lights and travelled on the wrong side of the road during the chase.
The pursuit ended when he crashed into a street sign on Castlereagh St in Warwick Farm.
Hourani was arrested at the scene and taken to Liverpool Police Station.
The man has since been charged by officers from Bankstown Police Area Command with multiple offences, which include: Contravening an apprehended violence order; using a carriage service to threaten or harass; stalking or intimidating with intent to cause fear of physical harm; malicious damage; breach of bail; using a vehicle as a weapon to avoid apprehension and police pursuit.
Hourani faced Liverpool Local Court today, where he did not apply for bail.
Magristrate Andrew Miller formally refused Hourani bail, and he will remain on remand until July 30, when he is next scheduled to appear at the same court.
