A man will face court today after allegedly embarking on a carjacking spree across Sydney, that began with the theft of a delivery courier’s van in the CBD and ended with him in handcuffs in the city’s south, after unsuccessfully threatening two other drivers with a knife.
The shocking incidents began on Kippax St in Surry Hills just before 11am on Tuesday, when a hi-vis wearing delivery driver had a knife held to him by the alleged attacker.
It is alleged the delivery driver was told to hand over his keys, which he did, before the assailant sped off in his Ford transit van.
The courier then ran down the road and into the loading dock of News Corp’s head office desperately looking for help, where the security guards promptly called triple-0 and comforted the shaken, but thankfully unharmed, man.
In a statement, NSW Police said less than two hours later been called to reports of two other attempted carjackings at knifepoint, which they believe were carried out by the same man.
He was arrested at the scene and taken away for questioning.
“About 12.50pm, officers from Sutherland Police Area Command were called to The Boulevarde at Caringbah, near Taren Point Road, in response to reports the man, still armed with a knife, had unsuccessfully attempted to enter two cars,” a spokesperson said.
“Police arrested a 26-year-old man and he was taken to Sutherland Police Station. Inquiries are continuing.”
The man was charged by police with four offences – aggravated assault with intent to take/drive a motor vehicle, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, stealing and demand property with intent to steal.
He was refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday.
