Temperatures set to reach 40 degrees with widespread heatwave

Sydney is set to sweat through more heatwave conditions, with parts of the west forecast to soar above 30C every day this week.

The mercury in Penrith, Campbelltown, Camden and Richmond is expected to hit above 30C up until Sunday, with Thursday tipped to be the hottest day of the week at 38C.

The severe heat comes after parts of Sydney recorded their hottest December day on record last Saturday.

“Sydney Airport recorded its hottest December day on record (in records going back to 1929),” reported website Weatherzone.

“Its peak of 43.5°C just after 1pm beat the old mark of 43.2°C which had stood since 1994.

“Several locations in the city’s outer west got hotter than Sydney Airport, including the site of Sydney’s future second major airport at Badgerys Creek, which reached 44.0°C.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe heatwave warnings for the Mid North Coast, Hunter, Northern Tablelands, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes & Plains, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Lower Western and Upper Western Districts.

“Severe heatwave conditions are continuing across much of NSW over the next few days, contracting to smaller, localised areas later in the week,” a BOM statement said.

“Locations likely to be impacted include Bathurst, Bulahdelah, Camden, Campbelltown, Dubbo, Gosford, Griffith, Hornsby, Liverpool, Orange, Richmond, metropolitan Sydney and Tamworth.”

Meanwhile, firefighters are currently battling 60 bush and grass fires across the state, but have their hands full with seven fires burning out of control.

A bushfire near Tenterfield in the state’s north has already burned through 878 hectares.

“The bush fire is burning to the east of the Beardy River, south of the Bruxner Highway approximately 55km southwest of Tenterfield,” RFS said.

“Residents along the Beardy River in the vicinity of Glenrock Rd and Beardy River Rd should continue to monitor conditions.”

Thousands are expected to flock to Sydney’s beaches to provide relief to the soaring temperatures.
