Man accused of home invasion, stolen car chase and assaulting police after dramatic lagoon arrest

A man arrested in Narrabeen Lagoon after a dramatic police chase is now accused of kicking down a door to gain access to a Girraween home and stealing a car, then later assaulting two officers.

A dramatic stolen-car pursuit that ended with a man being arrested in Narrabeen Lagoon began hours earlier with an alleged home invasion in Sydney’s west.

Just before 9.30am on Sunday, officers were called to Magowar Rd in Girraween, after reports a man had allegedly kicked in the front door of a home while three people were inside.

It will be alleged he stole a set of car keys from inside before taking a white Toyota Corolla from the driveway.

Police said the offender and occupants were not known to each other and no confrontation occurred.

Then just after 11am, police spotted the Corolla on the Warringah Freeway at Northbridge and attempted to stop it.

When the driver allegedly failed to pull over, a pursuit began but was terminated for safety reasons.

A second chase was also initiated a short time later but again called off.

Just after midday, police saw the car on Pittwater Rd in Narrabeen, where it allegedly mounted the gutter and came to a stop.

The driver then fled on foot and ran into Narrabeen Lagoon.

Footage posted to social media shows the damaged Corolla rolling onto the footpath before the man jumps out and sprints towards the water.

One officer can be seen losing his footing as he gives chase, before more police converge and arrest the man in the lagoon.

During the arrest, a male senior constable suffered a dislocated shoulder.

Police said the man was taken to Manly Police Station where it will be further alleged he provided false details and refused to undergo a breath test, drug test and breath analysis.

While in custody, police allege he punched a male constable in the face, causing minor injuries.

The 32-year-old man, who has no fixed address, has now been charged with 10 offences, including aggravated break and enter; taking and driving a vehicle without consent; two counts of police pursuit; reckless driving; giving a false name; refusing breath tests and assaulting police causing actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Manly Local Court on Monday.
