The groom who lost his wife in the Hamilton Island golf buggy tragedy is the son of former NSW Police detective Sid Morgan, who made headlines in the 1990s when he was acquitted of the shooting murder of his brother-in-law.
Robbie Morgan was honeymooning with new wife Marina when a golf buggy he was driving rolled over as he attempted to do a U-turn on the island.
Mrs Morgan was crushed under the vehicle and died.
The Sydney newlyweds had been on holiday for just three days before the freak accident on Monday.
Mr Morgan’s father Sid gained prominence in the 1990s when the then-police officer was acquitted of murder after fatally shooting a family member who had been accused of molesting three young girls.
The 1995 murder trial, which attracted widespread publicity at the time, was told Sid Morgan had used his service revolver to fatally shoot his brother-in-law at his Oakhurst home after learning of the allegations.
He did not rejoin NSW Police, but he later found success working as a real estate agent in Sydney’s Hills district.
In 2019, he was shot in the head in Melbourne.
Last year, three Irish men were acquitted of attempted murder after being accused of the shooting. They had pleaded not guilty.
A court heard during the trial of the men that the shooting was connected to a business dispute.
Robbie Morgan’s brother Matty this week wrote a heartfelt tribute to Ms Morgan, describing the absolute heartache his family is now going through.
“From the moment I met you, I knew you were the one for my brother,” he wrote.
“Your kind, gentle nature is a testament to the type of person you are.”
