A horse has been killed and its rider is in hospital after the animal was hit by several vehicles in Sydney’s south west on Monday afternoon.
About 2.40pm a 35-year-old man was riding his horse near Bankstown Central shopping centre on Stacey St, Bankstown when the animal threw him from its back and onto the road where he was hit by a passing car.
The 35-year-old was treated by several paramedic crews at the scene for head and leg injuries before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The horse bolted from the scene, reportedly chased by several members of the public before it was hit by a truck on Canterbury Rd near Claribel St, Bankstown a short time later.
Shocking footage of the injured animal has emerged on social media, showing the critically injured horse struggling feebly on the roadside in broad daylight as helpless bystanders looked on.
Police attended the scene and euthanised the horse at the site a short time later.
Two of three lanes at Canterbury Rd were closed for hours following the incident and investigations are ongoing.
