Notorious paedophile Shannon Norgate has died following an altercation with two other inmates at a Queensland prison.
The 28-year-old, who was convicted of five child sex offences in 2020, was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital after he was found unresponsive at Maryborough Correctional Centre on November 26.
He died on Monday, December 1, a spokesperson on behalf of Queensland Police and Queensland Corrective Services confirmed in a statement.
“The Queensland Police Service is investigating the death of a prisoner from Maryborough Correctional Centre,” the statement read.
“The prisoner died at Hervey Bay Hospital on December 1 following an alleged incident in custody with two other prisoners on November 26.
“Information indicates around 9am on Wednesday, November 26, a 28-year-old person was located unresponsive following a suspected altercation with two other prisoners.”
Police and Corrective Services thanked “the responding Maryborough officers … for their professionalism and are being supported by management and specialised employee support services”.
No prison staff were injured in the incident.
Norgate was first jailed in March 2020 after being found guilty of five child offences, including the 2019 sexual assault of two boys in a Gladstone school bathroom while dressed as a security guard.
He served just 14 months of his four-year jail sentence before it was suspended.
He later faced court on other occasions including for failing to report a reportable offender under the Child Protection (Offender Reporting and Offender Prohibition Order), possessing a needle and for contravening an offender prohibition order.
In 2023, he was handed a two-year prison sentence after he was caught grooming a 12-year-old.
