Born and bred Darwinite Brendan Lew Fatt started his apprenticeship at 20-years-old – 15 years later he has been voted as NT’s best.

The 35-year-old was inspired by his grandfather who was a sparky, and pursued his career for twelve years before branching off and starting his business ‘MBL Electrical’ with his best mate Michael Billias.

Brendan says the most important part of his apprenticeship was the team he had around him – which is what he is trying to create at MBL Electrical with his young apprentices.

“What we’re trying to do is just have a young team and everyone gets along with each other and enjoy work, it’s not just work, it’s something you love as well,” Mr Lew Fatt said.

“It’s a good challenge, it’s good to mentor (the apprentices), try and make them grow and do what we used do.”

Brendan says that being born and bred in Darwin gives the MBL team an upper hand in the community, and having friendly customer service is what sets you apart from the rest.

“Just showing that you’re trustworthy, and you can do the job properly, because it is a pretty dangerous trade industry if you don’t know what you are doing.”

When it comes to most challenging job that Brendan has faced, he says it has to be running the business.

“Being a sparky is the easiest gig, running a company is a different story.”

Regardless of the highs and lows of being a business operator Brendan says his biggest goal is to see the MBL team grow.

“I’d like to see my apprentices become tradesmen, I want them to still love it and stick it out.”

The top three finalist are:

  • Brendan Lew Fatt - MBL Electrical
  • Grant Gallus
  • Themeli - TRIKI Electrical
