Air North’s first direct flight from Cairns to Alice Springs will touch down today and it is being hailed as a game changer.
The Embraer 190 with a 2-2 seat configuration carries 100 passengers and departs Cairns at 12.30pm. It is due to arrive at Alice Springs airport at 2.20pm, connecting Central Australia to tropical Far North Queensland.
Tourism Central Australia Chair, Patrick Bedford said improved air access is critical to the success of the region.
“This new route will provide greater opportunities to attract visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen the tourism economy across the Red Centre.”
Mr Bedford said the industry in the Centre were grateful for the commitment to enhancing regional connectivity by Airnorth and the Northern Territory Government.
The new service, operating three times per week offers more than 30,000 seats annually and enhances domestic and international itineraries, strengthening links between two of Australia’s most iconic regions.
Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker said Airnorth’s new service would entice more visitors to both Cairns and Alice Springs and encourage longer stays in each region.
“Each destination offers unique attractions and rich cultural experiences, so tourists are usually keen to visit both regions while they’re here,” said Mr Barker.
“This new, direct service will streamline their journey and prevent additional stops in capital city airports, which means more time for exploring the beauty of Tropical North Queensland and Alice Springs.”
Trade, Business and Asian Relations Minister Robyn Cahill said the inaugural flight brings with it economic and tourism potential.
“This new service is a game-changer for Central Australia, providing greater access for visitors, businesses, and investors,” Minister Cahill said.
“Improved air connectivity is key to unlocking opportunities across tourism, trade, and regional development.
“This route will attract more visitors to the Northern Territory while also supporting business and industry growth. It’s a fantastic outcome for both regions.”
Airnorth CEO Daniel Bowden said the airline is proud to expand its network with this important new connection.
“The Alice Springs–Cairns route strengthens Australia’s regional network, linking two dynamic destinations that offer unique tourism experiences and business opportunities,” said Mr Bowden.
“We’re thrilled to provide greater accessibility and choice for travellers.”
Airport Development Group Executive General Manager Airports Rob Porter said the new service is a testament to the strong partnerships between Airnorth, the Northern Territory Government, and Airport Development Group.
“It demonstrates our shared commitment to expanding air connectivity and driving economic benefits for Alice Springs and the wider Territory,” he said.
