Katherine woman accused of stealing ute charged, others still at large
July 16, 3pm: A woman who allegedly stole a car from the Katherine Showgrounds has been charged, as Northern Territory Police promise an “increased” police presence in the region ahead of the weekend.
Authorities received reports of a silver Toyota HiLux being stolen from the showgrounds while the owner was unloading items from the rear of the vehicle at about 10.30pm Tuesday.
NT Police said it responded to the incident and saw the car on Murray St a short time later.
A pursuit took place, police said, however it was terminated for “safety reasons”.
Authorities received further reports at about 12am of a burglary at a cafe on Katherine Terrace.
Police alleged a number of offenders “forced entry” and stole a number of items before fleeing in the silver HiLux.
The ute was seen on Chambers Drive, police said, and a traffic stop was attempted.
Police allege a pursuit began after the driver of the HiLux failed to stop, however it was terminated not long after for safety reasons.
The car was later seen by Police CCTV Operators driving north over the Katherine high level bridge at about 4.55am Wednesday, police said.
Police said all units co-ordinated a plan to stop the car, and tyre deflation devices were “successfully” deployed on the high level bridge at about 5.10am.
The car was recovered on Riverbank Drive and police arrested a 23-year-old woman as she left the car, police said.
The woman was charged with Drive a motor vehicle without consent and she was bailed to appear in Katherine Local Court on August 28.
Strike Force Cerberus has carriage of the investigation, police said, and “several” alleged offenders remain at large.
Acting Superintendent Warren Scott said NT Police had “increased our local police presence to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all” because of the “significant influx of people in Katherine this weekend for the show”.

HiLux havoc: ‘Series of offences’ across Katherine
July 16, 6.30am: NT Police are still searching for six offenders who they believe were involved in a “series” of offences across Katherine overnight.
Northern Watch Commander Steve Langdon said the first incident involved the alleged theft of a silver Toyota HiLux.
“About 10.30pm a motor vehicle was stolen from the Katherine showgrounds,” he said.
“It was then driven around town multiple times attempting to engage police with unknown offenders sitting on windowsills of the vehicle.”
Commander Langdon said due to the dangerous position the joy-riders had put themselves in, police decided to terminate their pursuit.
“We always consider the safety of the public and our officers when deciding whether to engage in a high risk pursuit,” he said.
Police allege the same vehicle was used by the same group as a getaway car in an unlawful entry at Katherine Coffee Club just after midnight.
Commander Langdon said the HiLux was eventually stopped about 5.10am when it was spotted entering Katherine town again.
He said police deployed a tyre deflation to successfully stop the vehicle, leading to the arrest of a 23-year-old woman at the scene.
Police are still looking for another six individuals as they believe there were a total of seven people crammed into the dual cabin HiLux when it was stopped.
“At this stage we believe the series of offences are connected as the same vehicle has been used,” he said.
