January 27, 2025: Alice Springs police arrested three teenagers who attempted to use an angle grinder to break into The Gap Road supermarket about midnight on Sunday.
Watch Commander, Acting Senior Sergeant Marc Watson, said neighbours contacted police soon after the three youths had activated the angle grinder.
Sgt Watson said police attended the supermarket and chased down and arrested two teenage male offenders aged 14 and 16.
He said one of those was still allegedly in possession of a battery operated angle grinder at the time of his arrest.
A 15-year-old suspect was also later arrested at his home.
At this stage all three remain in custody while investigations continue.
“Obviously an angle grinder woke quite a few residents around the place who called us when they saw sparks flying next to the supermarket,” Sgt Watson said.
“It’s probably not the best tool to use at that time of the morning.”
Plastic sword used in attempted shop-stealing
January 27, 2025: A 14-year-old male was arrested in Alice Springs after allegedly threatening staff at a Braitling service station with a weapon.
Police received a report about 11.50am on Sunday that a group of offenders entered the Coles Express in Braitling and began stealing food and drinks.
When confronted by employees, one of the group produced what initially appeared to be a machete and threatened staff before leaving the store.
Police tracked the male using CCTV footage and arrested him just before 1pm, where it was confirmed the teenager was armed with a plastic toy sword.
The youth was bailed to appear at the Youth Justice Court on February 10.
