Tax cuts and vaccines for Territorians help to kick off new year

Territory businesses and families will benefit from new measures being introduced by the government.

A suite of Northern Territory government election promises will commence on New Year’s Day.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the measures would deliver on her government’s pledge to build the economy and deliver cost-of-living relief.

This followed the increase of the Home and Business Solar Battery Scheme bonus from $5000 to $12,000 in early December.

From January 1, the NT’s payroll threshold will increase from $1.5m to $2.5m and exempt apprentices and trainee wages from payroll tax.

The government estimated the reforms would save local businesses an average of $22,000 a year and abolish payroll tax for 200 small businesses, which it hopes will then reinvest the savings into apprenticeships and traineeships.

In addition from Wednesday, the government will deliver free Meningococcal B vaccines for all infants under the age of two, and adolescents aged 14 to 19 years, and free driver’s licences for one year for 112,000 Territory motorists.

“This is about saving Territorians time and money, ensuring Territorians are spending less time at MVR and more time enjoying our unique lifestyle,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“Our free Meningococcal B vaccination program is part of the CLP’s plan to lower the cost of living for Territory families. It will remove financial barriers, increase vaccine uptake, and provide protection against the deadly meningococcal disease for 4200 babies and 18,500 adolescents.”

Also coming later this year will be the rollout of free swimming lessons for primary school students between years 1-6.

“Our free swimming and water safety program in schools will equip young Territorians with lifesaving skills and improve their ability to be safe around water, which is a big part of our

fantastic outdoor lifestyle,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“In just four months, we’ve laid the foundations for a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Northern Territory.

“As we move into 2025, the CLP Government remains laser-focused on building a better future where the Northern Territory is a competitive place in Australia to live, work, visit and invest.”
