St Mary’s showed their pace and want to be the best as they snapped PINT’s unbeaten run in the NTFL Women’s Premier League.
The Queenants had not suffered defeat in the NTFL since the semi-final of the 2022-23 season against Waratah – an incredible 700 days – with only a draw to Saints in 2023-24 denting their perfect record.
But St Mary’s were determined to come out on top against the side that has won three of the past four premierships and made that clear as they ran out the 6.2 (38) to 2.6 (18) winners.
The Green Machine haven’t lost themselves since their last meeting back in Round 3, a match they actually led for the majority of the day.
This time around it was their pace early on and some inaccuracies from their foes that set the tone for a Saints win.
Paula Pavic showed what she’s made of in the ruck contest up against Jasmyn Hewett, who has twice won the women’s best and fairest medal.
Emily Forshaw and Janet Baird were everywhere defensively pressuring the Queenants to make mistakes when set up, while Ciaralii Parnell enjoyed one of her best games of the season.s
Impressively, despite having the lead established in the fourth the Saints never let off the gas, as they did earlier in the season, and built on the margin instead.
Nadia von Bertouch scored twice while Caitlin Sargent had three majors to her name to establish their side’s win against the side that beat them in last year’s grand final.
Jordan Membrey and Stella Ajani were the best for PINT, but for one reason or another they couldn’t quite get over the line in a loss that perhaps came at the right time leading into finals.
PREVIEW
A top two battle will headline women’s action in round 16 when PINT and St Mary’s clash in what shapes as a finals preview.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 12.30pm on Saturday.
The Saints led for the majority of their previous face-off all the way back in Round 3, but they fell away late and were defeated by the reigning premiers.
But in an impressive run, they’ve gone undefeated since and beaten all comers including a strong Nightcliff outfit and appear to be priming just in time for finals.
But first they need to achieve something they’ve failed in the past two seasons, beating PINT, a hurdle they’ve come incredibly close to but never quite got over the line.
Shakalia Gardiner-Dunn has been a consistent standout from their younger ranks often creating or scoring when opportunities come, and Nadia von Bertouch has been influential since her arrival.
Though they will have their work cut out for them against the Queenants, who find ways to win even when down heading into the later stages of the game.
Jasmyn Hewett is a constant influence from the middle while the likes of Reni Hicks, Amy Chittick and Stella Ajani keep turning out to put the side on the front foot.
PINT have yet to lose a game this season, but know their opponents will be a tough challenge and won’t want to drop a game to give a confidence boost to one of their major rivals on the eve of finals.
The full replay will be available at the end of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
